We understand that choosing the right landscape materials can be overwhelming. This page is designed to answer your most frequently asked questions and help you find the perfect products for your outdoor space.
Q: I'm putting in pavers, what do I put underneath?
A: In Florida, technically just 2 inches of paver sand. It isn't like up North, where you need to go like 8 inches deep with 3 different materials. Normally, you just need 2 inches of paver sand... If you did need to build it up (say 6 inches), then you would use 4 inches of Shell Marl (aka road base) and then the 2 inches of paver sand. Then for the top, you just need a little bit of DOT sand brushed/swept in between the pavers to help lock them in place.
Q: I need to be able to add on to my driveway without concrete. What do you recommend?
A: Driveway stones (3/4" #57 limestone). In most cases you just need to go 3 inches deep. (you can also use crushed shell to give you a "Florida" look, but it gets stuck in your shoes and tires when it gets wet and is a little less durable than the limestone)
Q: How many bags of mulch make a cubic yard?
A: 13.5
Q: How many bags of rock make a cubic yard?
A: 55
Q: Do you carry "pea gravel"?
A: We carry 3 different materials that people call pea gravel. 1/2" Brown River Rock and #89 (3/8" limestone/shell mix) are the 2 most common...We also carry Pure Beach Pebbles, which has many uses including dog runs.
Q: What material do I use for chicken coops?
A: Paver sand is the most common, but we recommend coming in and checking out what we offer. Occasionally people go with D.O.T. sand or fill dirt depending on the situation.
Q: What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?
A: Fill dirt is thicker and is used more as a base and to build up or solidify areas. Topsoil is light and fluffy and should be used for planting and to lay sod on. Both of these products are somewhat "sandy", which is normal in Florida. If you aren't sure which material to use, please feel free to ask us.
Q: Why does your topsoil look like that? It looks completely different up North.
A: Our topsoil is good for anything that grows naturally in Florida. It is made from burnt up brush and is naturally sandy which is normal in Florida.
Q: How much material can my truck haul?
A: Good question, it depends on what model and year your truck is and also what material you are buying. For example, Red Lava weighs 1100 pounds, but River Rock weighs 2700 pounds. Let us know what kind of truck or trailer you have and what material you want and we'll be happy to help you.
Q: How do I determine how much material I need?
A: We can help you with that. We need to know a couple things. The type of material you want and what your total square footage is. To determine square footage, just let us know the width and length of each section you want to cover.
Q: What about weedmat/weed barrier/ground cover? Do you recommend it?
A: We highly recommend the weedmat we carry. Ours is commercial grade and is much stronger than what you normally find at the big box stores (but right around the same price). We carry it in 12 different sizes and we also carry the pins/staples to hold the mat in the ground.
